Artists of West Virginia Juried Exhibit

The Berkeley Arts Council announces the Artists of West Virginia Juried Exhibit, to be displayed in the Berkeley Art Works gallery, 116 North Queen Street in Martinsburg, WV from September 4 – November 2, 2024.

Eligibility – The exhibit is open to artists over the age of 18 who reside in West Virginia.

Theme – The theme for the exhibit is open. Works in any medium or technique, in 2- or 3-dimensions, abstract, representational or non-representational subject matter are welcome. Entries must be original works of art that have been completed within the last 3 years and have not been exhibited previously at the Berkeley Art Works.

Juror – Hilary White is an artist and adult art educator. She has been painting and teaching since 1993. She offers private art lessons from her studio and also gives regional workshops and retreats for local art groups. She is active in her arts community, having juried various student art shows and is involved with the scholarship program at Valley Educational Center for the Creative Arts (VECCA), an educational non-profit organization serving the Shenandoah Valley. Hilary has a Master’s degree in Art Education from George Mason University.

Entry Fee – The entry fee is $35 for the first two works. Artists may submit one or two additional works for $10 each, for a maximum of four works submitted.

Awards – Best in Show, Merit Award and Honorable Mention.

Deadline for Entries – Midnight Wednesday July 31, 2024.

Entries – Two-dimensional work must be suitably framed and must not exceed 48 inches in width, including frame. Framing must be equipped with wire, ready for hanging (no sawtooth or single loop hangers, please). Please use plexiglass instead of glass. Three-dimensional work must not exceed 72 inches in height and 36 inches in width or depth, and must be free-standing.

Image Submission – Entries for the exhibit must be submitted as digital images for jurying. You may submit up to four works to be juried for this exhibit; one image per work. One additional image to show detail for 3-dimensional work is allowed.

The image file format should be normal (baseline) JPEG. Do not save as ‘progressive’ JPEG. The images should be 1200 pixels on the long dimension with the other dimension proportional. Save at 72 PPI/DPI at high quality setting (8 out of 10 or 80% is good). Set the filename to lastname_title_WxHxD_entrynumber.jpg (example: jones_pretty girl_11x14x1_no1.jpg).

Notification of Accepted Work – The juror’s selections will be announced by e-mail and posted on the Berkeley Arts Council Web site on or about Friday August 9, 2024. Detailed delivery instructions will be provided when accepted artists are announced.

Be sure your contact information and all information in your entries is complete and correct. The Berkeley Arts Council will use this information for notifications and to generate wall tags for the exhibition.

General Guidelines for Accepted Work:
Entries must be original works of art that have been completed within the last 3 years and have not been exhibited previously at the Berkeley Art Works.

The Berkeley Arts Council reserves the right to reject any work that is not consistent with the work presented in the digital entry image, or if the framing or presentation is not adequate.

No substitution, exchange, modification, or withdrawal of works is permitted after they are accepted for the exhibition.

Commission: The Berkeley Arts Council retains a 30% commission on all sales. Work may not be removed during the exhibit.

Insurance/Liability: By delivering or shipping your work, you agree that, although the Berkeley Arts Council will take reasonable measures to ensure the safety of the work in the gallery, the Berkeley Arts Council is not responsible for loss of or damage to the artwork, and the artist is responsible for his/her own insurance if desired.

Publicity: Artist grants permission for the Berkeley Arts Council to use submitted images of artwork for promotion and publicity. The Berkeley Arts Council will promote the exhibit through its Web site, e-mail list, press releases, and social media.

Important Dates:

  • Deadline for digital entries: Wednesday July 31, 2024 (Midnight).
  • Notification of acceptance e-mailed & posted: On or about Friday August 9, 2024.
  • Arrival of all accepted works to the Berkeley Art Works: Monday August 26 – Saturday August 31, 2024.
  • Exhibit Dates: Wednesday September 4 – Saturday November 2, 2024.
  • Pick Up Work at End of Exhibit: Saturday November 2, 2024 between 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
  • Return of Shipped Work – On or about Monday/Tuesday November 4-5, 2024.
