Smashed, Sanded, Strung—my three words describing my art of upcycling vintage china into one-of-a-kind jewelry. It started in 2020 while I was doing yard work and had found old china fragments. My house is over 100 years old and I wanted to turn the pieces into something commemorative of its history. They became my first necklaces.
I liked the concept so much, I started shopping thrift stores for antique orphan plates and teacups. One of the unexpected, yet beautiful outcomes of my craft’s growth has been commissions from customers requesting heirloom jewelry created from their family’s broken china. My repurposing techniques are simple—the china is broken (smashed) with a hammer for the organic, unique shapes. Each piece is sanded smooth, then strung with hand-cut chain. A simple means to repurposing the old into ‘new’, wearable art.
